Paddleballmag's Opinion
One Wall "another year" Where we going?
With 2009 in the books, Is 2010 going to be better, brighter?
From our prospective, big ball may be the answer. But one view that could be debated is the view of one wall events verses multi wall events.
Four wall handball, racquetball, and four wall paddleball they all have a game dimensions that provides a certain respect of the game. The angles and positions to win are obviously different from that of one wall sports.
Without disrespecting and insulting multi wall sports. One wall has its dimensions too. Depending on the sport, handball, one wall racquetball and one wall paddleball. The game is played differently, because no multi wall shots are necessary. A player can't use the rear walls and corners to win points. Because one wall is one dimension, everything has to come off the front wall. The skill and techniques necessary to be successful is different then four walls.
With one wall for example handball, a player has to be even more alert. The point, the play could end quickly. The strategy is different. The shot approach, player position. Even the shot selections are different then in four walls.
In one wall racquetball. The points become more dynamic. Because the ball has a slightly higher skip ratio. Because a string racquet is used. There is a wiping factor that forces the defensive player to give more room for the swing. The drop shots have to be more deceive.
In one wall paddleball, nothing much has changed with the dynamics of the game. Recently the game has given way to different size balls. 2009 has had more big ball tournaments then small ball events. The game has a different texture. There are still roll outs and spikes. But not the speed of the volleys that dominated the small ball players. Also big ball provides a better feel for the viewers of the game. They can see the inner play of the game. The strategies that team play provides. The enjoyment of doubles and mixed doubles can provide.
Paddleballmag would like to see companies Ektelon, Wilson, Penn and other paddle and ball companies develop a tournament circuit on a one year trial bases. Three tournaments in the West Coast areas and three tournaments in the Eastern Areas. Each company would feature there products and their tournament ball.
Providing advertisement and prizes to bring the big guns from the other one and four wall sports. We think a 16 team venture designed to show case the game, the players and the excitement of game could produce a following. The question is not how to make it happen? But who will make it happen?
The other thought is why make it happen? There are several paddle and racquet sports. Not to mention handball! Why do we need another sport? That answer is in the passion of the players!
Other paddle and padel sports are moving into the viewer's eye. The APTA has been around for seventy five years. Their venue platform tennis like paddle tennis and padel are very similar yet some what different.
What it comes down to is your passion for your game! Each sport has it's own value and excitement to each person who plays the sport. It's hard to convince anyone which sport is right. You have to play them and find your own!
